Cisco VPN Client Reason 442 Failed to Enable Virtual Adapter- How to Fix it

[Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter.]

This error message popup on Windows 8.1/10/11, As the user double-clicks on the selected Connection profile, the VPN client will begin its negotiation with server and request the username and password. the way how to install

As the required credentials provided to application, VPN client shows status “Securing communications channel” at the bottom of the windows application:  After few seconds Cisco VPN Client will time out and through the message “Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter”.  And status will be changed to “Not Connected”.

Here are some points how to troubleshoot this issue?

Thankfully, the troubleshooting this problem is simple and easy, with limited experience even any user can perform with following easy steps.


Step 1:

Open Run Prompt Window by pressing Windows + R key from keyboard. Then type regedit to open Windows registry editor.

Step 2:

  • From Registry Editor Window Navigate to   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE << SYSTEM << ControlSet001 << Services << CVirtA

Step 3:

  • Search for Display Name Key , Double click it to edit the entry.

Step 4:

  • Change From or remove extra text before Cisco Systems VPN Adapter

Important Note:

If you are using Windows 8.1 32bit (x86) operating systems, then change the value data from @oem8.inf,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter to Cisco Systems VPN Adapter.

 

If you are using  Windows 8 64bit (x64) operating systems, then change the value data from @oem8.inf,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows to Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows (as below image):

Once changes done click on OK button and close Windows Registry Editor.

Require changes could not need to restart/ reboot windows OS.

Now you can run the CISCO VPN Client connecting to your required target Virtual Private Network(VPN). Enjoy

 

Method 2: 

if you are using Windows 7 operating system and have same error message “Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter”. here we will provide quick solution to resolve the issue.

  1. Following the steps are helpful to be resolved quickly.
  2. Hit the start button and type “services.msc‘ as shown:
  3. Locate and stop Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service;
  4. Stop and disable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service;
  5. Restart Cisco System, Inc. VPN Service.
